COURTROOM OBSERVATION AND NARRATIVE ASSIGNMENT - Essay Example When I entered the courtroom, the following people were in attendance: the judge, defendant, two of police officers, plaintiff and two attendants. The case was about drugs. I noticed that the judge was using a computer to process information about the court proceedings. In my own opinion, I think it is good to use new information and communication technology such as computers when dealing with such cases since it is easy to process and store information. In other countries, they do not use such technology. I noticed that the judge talked with confidence when she was asking the defendant some questions. She never ignored the defendant and she paid attention to everything he said. The most interesting thing that caught my attention was the way the speaking was organized. When the defendant finished speaking, the judge kept quiet briefly. After that, she started speaking. The process was very efficient. If I compare that with my country, there are clear distinctions. In my country, whic h is Saudi Arabia, there are a lot of loud sounds in court. Sometimes, you do not know who is talking. It looks like chaos. Here, the hall was so quite. No talked randomly. However, I did not really understand the details of the case because it was continued from an earlier hearing. There was some information I had missed. Another thing that I did not understand was that I did not see a defense lawyer representing the defendant. I just saw the plaintiff. When the judge was talking, the defendant received the verdicts quietly. The defendant had some files he was using to research some information to prove his innocence. The judge was giving the defendant enough time to talk and to research by his files. I believe that is fair to give the defendant an opportunity to defend himself.
